The Fourth Session of IMC International Mathematics Contest 2008
successfully concluded

The fourth session of IMC international mathematics contest was held in beautiful garden city Singapore during July 17th to 22nd, 2008. More than 500 elementary and middle school students from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Philippines, India, Indonesia and Singapore, the six countries and regions has participated in this Contest.

The participants of this Contest were divided into seven groups based on their grade, respectively were Grade 3-9. In order to meet the different requirements of various countries and regions and ensure the students’ mathematical abilities into full play, the Contest paper consisted of four language versions, mixed Chinese & English, Traditional Chinese, English and Indonesian. According to the awards, students from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Philippines showed a higher level in this Contest. In the afternoon of July 20th, the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the Fourth Session IMC International Mathematics Contest and the get-together party were grandly held. More than 10 representatives and honored guests from Singapore National Tourism Board, Singapore Management University, Singapore ISS International School, Ministry of Education of Philippine, MTG Philippines, Indonesia Mathematics Education Center, Hong Kong Mathematical Olympiad School, City Montessori School of India ,Beijing Science Association as well as Beijing Committee of China “Hope Cup” national mathematics invitational Contest have attended the ceremony. Representatives and students carried a passionate speech and guests issued the certificate and gold medals for the winning students. After the ceremony, the participative countries’ secretariats and students exchanged the presents with each other and took photos. In the get-together party, students from different countries and regions performed lots of wonderful programs. The performances Choir, two-man comic show and instrumental performances from Chinese students, and the national folk singing and dancing performances from India, the Philippines and Indonesia students have gained warmly welcome, the ceremony and the party filled with happy talking and laughing.

Compared with the first three sessions, the Fourth Session Contest had expanded in scales and participants numbers as well as improved in organizing and arranging. Students of various countries not only participated in the mathematics contest and the Prize Presentation Ceremony, but also were arranged a variety of visits, exchanges, sightseeing and other activities by IMC committee. The primary school students visited the Singapore Chantek primary school with the deep impression of beautiful campus environment and advanced teaching facilities. The middle school students visited the Science and Mathematics Senior Middle School attached to Singapore National University and communicated with the local students. Besides the above, the students also took tours to famous scenic sites and business centers in Singapore, such as Sentosa Island, Jurong Bird Park, Mount Faber, Orchard Road, cruised in the Singapore River sight-seeing the beautiful scenery, visited the Singapore's high-tech enterprises - Newater Plant & Biopolis, participated the students social dinner on the beach of Sentosa Island and watched a large water screen laser show - Song of the Sea.

Through the IMC international mathematics contest, communication, visits and tours, it not only examined and improved the students’ mathematics applicable ability, but also made the students experienced Singapore’s advanced and relaxed education system, and its unique cultural atmosphere mixed Chinese with the Western, as well as the excellent nature and humanity environment. The rich activities connotation not only opened the students’ eyes, increased knowledge, but also promoted mutual understanding and friendship between the students of various countries. The session should give all the participants a wonderful memory.
